BIOGRAPHY

Phyoe Kyi was a visionary contemporary artist from Myanmar who left an indelible mark on the art world. Born in 1977 in Taunggyi, Shan State, Kyi was a graduate of the University of Culture in Yangon, where he majored in Painting. He also worked as a graphic design teacher before founding the “Phyoekyi” art workshop in Taunggyi and Mingun.

Kyi was well-known for his thought-provoking works that tackled social issues such as poverty and inequality, and his ability to give a voice to those who were often ignored. His iconic works, including his animated films, performances, and installations, often dealt with the subconscious terrain of Myanmar’s political landscape and the shifting of power structures in the country. He was also a participant in numerous international art exhibitions, including the 3rd Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial and the 11th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh, where he performed his piece “Once Upon a Time there Was Nothing” at the 2012 Radius of Art in Berlin.

Phyoe Kyi’s passing was a great loss to the art world, but his artworks remain invaluable and continue to inspire future generations of artists. His works serve as a testament to his artistic genius and his unwavering commitment to shining a light on the struggles of marginalized communities. Phyoe Kyi will always be remembered as a forgotten legendary contemporary artist from Myanmar.
