BIOGRAPHY

Shwe Thein is a highly acclaimed and talented contemporary artist hailing from Myanmar. Born in 1981 in Rakhine state, he received formal training at the State School of Fine Art in Yangon from 2001 to 2004, where he was taught by renowned artists such as Mon Thet, U Than Kyawe, U Kyaw Ohn, U Kyaw Than, U Myint Maung, U Win Tint, U Myint Naing, and U Kyaw Thu Rein.

Shwe Thein is best known for his stunning traditional Arakan sailboat paintings that showcase his remarkable ability to capture the essence of the Arakanese culture through the interplay of light, color, and elements such as sky, water, and boats. He uses color as a key component in his work, creating a sense of harmony and completeness by seamlessly blending different elements together. Shwe Thein’s incredible color combinations and bold brushstrokes evoke a sense of energy and movement, bringing his scenes to life.

Throughout his career, Shwe Thein has participated in over 40 group exhibitions both in Myanmar and overseas, showcasing his work in countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Taipei, France, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam. He has also held several successful solo exhibitions, including “The Burma Hues” (2011), “Expression of Freedom” (2014), and “Small Travel Memories” (2020).

Shwe Thein’s paintings offer a fresh perspective on the relationship between humanity and nature, reminding us of our past and ongoing connection with boats and the journeys they represent.
